There are many food safety management systems being used across the globe, but companies are looking for a system that can be used in all aspects of the food chain and recognized globally and across industries.
The International Organization for Standardization, ISO is recognized globally for developing management systems standards for Quality, Environmental, Heath and Safety and many other systems. Building on its very effective and well recognized ISO 9001 Standard, ISO developed the Food Safety Management System ISO 22000.
The ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System was released in 2005, and is in use in by companies in many different food industries and countries. Companies obtain ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System registration by implementing a food safety management system that meets the requirements of the ISO 22000 standard, and having a Registration Audit performed by an accredited Registrar.
If the Registrar determines that the Food Safety Management System meets the requirements of ISO 22000, the Registrar will grant the organization ISO 22000 Registration. The Registrar will continue do periodic audits to ensure that the organization continues to meet requirements.
