Many large retailers require registration to a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) approved standard. ISO 22000 was reviewed by the Global Food Safety Initiative resulting in a new registration scheme using the ISO 22000 standard.

The new scheme, FSSC 22000 incorporates the ISO 22000 standard and another document, the PAS 220 for registration to FSSC 22000. The Global Food Safety Initiative has fully recognized this Food Safety Management registration scheme.
